The project is unique as patients will be examined and treatedthrough a new, holistic treatment approach in a coordinated process that is customized to the individual. The outcome of this approach is expected to result in healthier and more motivated citizens who have the energy to manage their sleep apnea through treatment and lifestyle changes. The project combines research and innovation with a strong patient focus. By closely examining current treatment methods and the challenges faced by citizens, researchers on both the Danish and Swedish sides expect that, by the end of the project, many more citizens will remain engaged in their treatment plans, thrive with the treatment, and experience significant improvements in their quality of life.

Growing challenge and no cure

Sleep apnea is a very serious chronic condition that can lead to dangerous comorbidities and, in the worst cases, can be fatal. The disease cannot currently be cured with existing treatments. At the same time, the number of cases of sleep apnea is continuously increasing. As a result, it represents a growing challenge and an escalating cost to society. According to the Swedish Apnéföreningarna, up to 400,000 Swedes suffer from sleep apnea to a degree that requires treatment. The Danish Sleep Apnea Association estimates that, in addition to the 90,000 Danes who are diagnosed, there are another 200,000 Danes who suffer from sleep apnea. Research on sleep apnea already shows that the condition is linked to many other diseases. In the long run, greater knowledge of sleep apnea and its connections to other conditions will lead to more diagnoses of sleep apnea and more citizens receiving appropriate treatment, which will improve their quality of life. This will also result in fewer cases of undiagnosed sleep apnea, which can lead to fewer traffic accidents and allow more people to stay in the workforce.

The beginning of a lasting collaboration

The results of the project could be crucial steps toward curing citizens of sleep apnea and ensuring them a significantly improved quality of life. The treatment approach developed can be expanded to other regions and countries, as the condition is a global challenge.
